Born and raised in the heart of France, Mathieu’s fascination with history began at a young age. From the time he was just 8 years old, he traveled across the country with his parents, visiting castles, fortifications, museums, churches, and any kind of cultural site they could find. These family trips sparked a lifelong passion for history, igniting a curiosity about the past that only grew stronger as he got older. Fueled by this enthusiasm, Mathieu pursued his love of history academically, studying the subject at university and eventually earning his degree.
Eager to share his knowledge and inspire others, Mathieu initially became a teacher after completing a master’s degree. However, after a year in the classroom, he realized that his true calling lay elsewhere. Feeling the pull of his passion for history and a desire to guide others in experiencing it firsthand, he decided to return to university to pursue another degree—this time in the art of guiding.
Upon earning his guiding degree, Mathieu set out on a mission to find his ideal job, carefully compiling a list of all the regions of France and prioritizing those with a rich blend of both contemporary and medieval history, two periods that had long captured his imagination. After much research and careful thought, one region stood out above the rest: Normandy. With its remarkable historical significance and unique blend of influences, Normandy quickly rose to the top of his list.
In 2017, Mathieu made the life-changing decision to move to Normandy, and that’s where he began his new career as a guide. From the very beginning, he fell in love with the region, despite its often unpredictable weather. The history of Normandy—its pivotal role in medieval times, its significance during the Second World War, and the countless stories etched into its landscape—fascinated him.
Since then, Mathieu has thrived as a guide, dedicating himself to sharing the rich, diverse history of his adopted region with others. His passion for history, his dedication to education, and his love for Normandy continue to drive him as he works to bring the past to life for visitors from around the world. Each tour is an opportunity for him to share his knowledge, inspire curiosity, and help others connect with the historical moments that have shaped this remarkable region.
