General Edgar Feuchtinger (1894-1960)
General Edgar Feuchtinger was a German officer who served in the Wehrmacht during World War II. He held various commands throughout the war and played a significant role in the German military.
Feuchtinger is notably remembered as the commander of the 21st Panzer Division during the Normandy campaign in 1944. His division was stationed near the invasion beaches and played a crucial part in the German defense against the Allied landings.
During the early stages of the Normandy invasion on June 6, 1944, Feuchtinger’s 21st Panzer Division was one of the key German units tasked with countering the Allied assault. Their efforts were aimed at repelling the invading Allied forces and preventing their advance inland.
However, despite the initial defense efforts, the overwhelming Allied numbers and firepower eventually led to the breakthrough and establishment of a beachhead. Feuchtinger and his division were involved in the subsequent German attempts to contain and push back the invading Allied forces in the Normandy campaign.
Feuchtinger’s leadership and actions during the Normandy campaign were part of the broader German defense against the Allied invasion. After the war, he was held as a prisoner of war by the Allies until 1948.
General Edgar Feuchtinger’s role as a commander in the defense of Normandy remains a part of the history of the German military’s involvement in World War II.
