Colonel Robert G. Cole (1915-1944)

Colonel Robert G. Cole was a highly decorated officer in the United States Army during World War II. He served as the commanding officer of the 3rd Battalion, 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division.

Cole is particularly renowned for his leadership and actions during the Normandy campaign. On June 11, 1944, during the fighting in Normandy, he led his battalion in a critical assault near Carentan, France. Despite heavy German resistance, Cole’s leadership and bravery inspired his men to push forward and secure their objectives.

Tragically, during the attack, Colonel Cole was fatally wounded by enemy fire. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his extraordinary leadership and valor in the face of fierce opposition. His citation recognized his gallantry and selflessness in leading the assault, which contributed significantly to the success of the Allied forces in that area.
